Recommendations for visits to important bat roosts

One of the seemingly "innocent" but often detrimental pressures on the program's bat species is the human presence in important roosts, whether for speleological expeditions, archeological excavations, or other scientific activities or leisure visits. Especially during the period of birth and upbringing of newborns (nurseries, May - July) but also in winter (November-February), in the coldest caves, human presence can lead to mass deaths immediately or in the medium term.

Completion of LIFE GRECABAT work in Spilaiovarathro Petasi Cave, at the POZAR Baths of Almopia

In March 2025, the work for the protection of the habitat and bat colonies in the Spilaiovarathro Petasi Cave at the POZAR Baths of Almopia, in the Prefecture of Pella, was completed, within the framework of Action C1 "Protection, restoration and management of important roosting sites for bats" of the LIFE GRECABAT Project.

Completion of the project for the protection of the Cave of Zesta Nera in the Prefecture of Serres

In March 2025, work was completed to protect the habitat and bat colonies in the Cave of Zesta Nera in Sidirokastro (Prefecture of Serres), within the framework of Action C1 "Protection, restoration and management of important roosting sites for bats" of the LIFE GRECABAT Project.

Completion of the project for the protection of the Maronia Cave in the Prefecture of Rhodope

In March 2025, work was completed to protect the habitat and bat colonies in the Maronia Cave in the Prefecture of Rhodope, within the framework of Action C1 "Protection, restoration and management of important roosting sites for bats" of the LIFE GRECABAT Project.

Restoration of the two old mines in the area of Dadia in the Prefecture of Evros

In March 2025, the project for the protection of the bat colonies in the two old mines at the locations "Tsoutouro" and "Agia Varvara" in the area of Dadia in the Prefecture of Evros was completed, which was implemented in the framework of Action C1 "Protection, restoration and management of important roosting sites for bats" of the LIFE GRECABAT Project.

Completion of the project for the protection of the Cave of the Lakes in Kastria, Achaia

In May 2024, the project for the protection of the habitat and colonies of bats in the Cave of the Lakes, in Kastria, Achaia, was completed, which was implemented in the framework of Action C1 "Protection, restoration and management of important roosting sites for bats" of the LIFE GRECABAT Project.

Completion of the project for the protection of the Paleomylos Sinkhole (Akraifnio) in Boeotia

In April 2024, the project for the protection of the habitat and colonies of bats in the Palaiomylos Sinkhole (Akraifnio, also known as the Sinkhole of Aliartos), in Boeotia, was completed, which was implemented in the framework of Action C1 "Protection, restoration and management of important roosting sites for bats" of the LIFE GRECABAT Project.
