Restoration of the two old mines in the area of Dadia in the Prefecture of Evros
In March 2025, the project for the protection of the bat colonies in the two old mines at the locations "Tsoutouro" and "Agia Varvara" in the area of Dadia in the Prefecture of Evros was completed, which was implemented in the framework of Action C1 "Protection, restoration and management of important roosting sites for bats" of the LIFE GRECABAT Project.
In the framework of the project, restoration works were carried out on the two old mines for:
-the support of the entrance of the mine in "Tsoutouro", the removal of the parts of the old support that had collapsed and the closure of the secondary opening,
-the improvement of the bioclimatic conditions of the mine of "Agia Varvara" through the closure of the secondary openings.
The main objective of the project was the long-term maintenance and protection of the bat colonies within the two mines.
In the months immediately following the implementation of the projects, hundreds of bats gathered in the two shelters to give birth to their young, which is recorded as a significant success.
We warmly thank the contractor company GRANITIS ΙΚΕ and especially Antonis for the design and implementation of the project, the Forestry Department of Soufli and Ioannis Papadopoulos for the supervision, the Management Unit of Evros Delta and Dadia National Parks of NECCA, but also the Society for the Protection of Biodiversity of Thrace for their valuable cooperation in the context of our Project.
