Completion of the project for the protection of the Paleomylos Sinkhole (Akraifnio) in Boeotia
In April 2024, the project for the protection of the habitat and colonies of bats in the Palaiomylos Sinkhole (Akraifnio, also known as the Sinkhole of Aliartos), in Boeotia, was completed, which was implemented in the framework of Action C1 "Protection, restoration and management of important roosting sites for bats" of the LIFE GRECABAT Project.
As part of the project, works were carried out such as the cleaning and management of the vegetation at the entrance of the cave, a small excavation to lower the ground level in front of the cave and the placement of large limestones and slabs to cover the ground.
The project aimed to control and manage the growth of vegetation (brates) that in the past had almost closed the entrance to the cave, as well as to inform visitors about the importance of the cave for chiroptera and cave invertebrates as well as about the rules of good behavior.
We warmly thank the team of the contractor company "EVANGELIA ANDRIANOPOULOU AND SIA EE" and especially Lilian for the impeccable design and implementation of the project, the Forestry Department of Thebes and Mrs. Margarita Marinou for the supervision of the project, the Municipality of Orchomenos and in particular the Local Community of Akraifnio as well as the Management Unit of the National Parks of Parnassos, Oiti and Protected Areas of Eastern Central Greece (NECCA) for their cooperation.
