ATEPE Ecosystem Management LTD (a Limited Liability Corporation under Greek Law) was founded in 2011 and specializes in biodiversity, ecosystems and landscape conservation. ATEPE Ltd:

Performs projects and programs on scientific monitoring and biodiversity, ecosystems and landscape conservation and rational management.
Assists in the harmonization of Greek, Mediterranean, European and International actions in order to preserve the national natural capital.
Ensures the implementation of national and Community legislation for the conservation of endangered habitats, species and landscapes.
Supports programs of mild touristic activities and ecotourism.
Informs and sensitizes the general public and the relevant Departments and Agencies.
Provides specialized education, training and retraining concerning nature conservation.
Organizes systems for the interpretation and promotion of the environment (information centers, nature interpretation trails, etc.) in order to attract and manage visitors in significant natural areas.
Creates promotional/awareness material such as books, pamphlets and educational kits ATEPE Ltd. consists of one main partner and six key partners. In addition, it is supported by numerous external collaborators and consultants specialized in the natural environment, environmental education, publications and custom constructions.

The Hellenic Institute of Speleological Research (HISR) is a non-governmental, non-profit, scientific organisation founded at the end of 2001 aiming to promote the scientific research, the education, and to raise public awareness for the conservation and sustainable management of the karstic areas and the subterranean environment of Greece.

Impements research projects and supports all kinds of activity that contributes significantly to the scientific speleological research.
Publishes scientific papers, studies and educational/paedagogical material.
Gathers and reviews the scientific literature on the cave fauna, the morphology of caves and the natural environment of karst areas and makes this knowledge accessible to any interested party through the open databases such as the cave fauna database of Greece (https://database.inspee.gr/)
Hosts and maintains a unique in size and scientific value scientific collection of cave animal specimens from more than 650 caves in Greece. The identification of the species is carried out in collaboration with Research Institutes in Greece and abroad.
Cultivates and promotes the environmental and cultural awareness, organising or participating in public events, conferences, lectures and discussions, and workshops.
Collaborates with national and international Research Institutions, Universities, Environmental Education Centres, speleological associations and environmental organisations in the fields of environmental research and protection, as well as public awareness and training.
Provides information and recommends protection issues to competent bodies concerning caves and their conservation and promotes the implementation of measures to protect the environmental and cultural heritage in karstic areas, with the aim of adopting attitudes, behaviors and friendly management policies to the environment.

HISR supports and is supported by a network of more than 100 volunteers (mainly speleologists and teachers from all over Greece), trained with special seminars in the field of cave biology.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy (ΜΕΕΝ) works to achieve the protection of the natural environment and resources, the improvement of quality of life, the mitigation and adjustment to the implications of climate change and the enhancement of mechanisms and institutions for environmental governance. MEEN is also the responsible body for the preparation, adoption and implementation of the Prioritized Action Framework (PAF) in Greece.

The responsibilities and the relevant experience of the Ministry are:

The formation of strategies and policies for the conservation and management of biodiversity and natural environment of the country.
Establishment of measures and actions for the conservation and management of habitat types, important and endemic species of flora and fauna, landscape and geotopes and coordination, monitoring and control for their implementation at national level.
Identification, preparation and institutionalization of protected areas, elements or sets of nature and landscape (e.g. N2000 Network, National and Regional Parks etc.).
Surveillance of the implementation of the statutory conservation and management of areas of the National System of Protected Areas.
Surveillance, coordination and administrative support of the management bodies of the protected areas, and monitoring of their programs in accordance with the legislation.
Environmental impact assessment of projects and activities.
Planning and operation of a system for collecting data on flora, fauna and habitats, determination of biomarkers, organization database and online data acquisition system with the National Environmental Information Network.
Participation, monitoring and implementation of the EC legislative framework (Directives 92/43, 2009/147, 2001/18, etc.)
Participation in international conventions and protocols (Convention on Biological Diversity, Ramsar Convention, Bonn Convention, Berne Convention, the Barcelona Convention, ACCOBAMS).

The establishment of GRFU (Law 3889/2010) allows a wide distribution of funds (coming from environmental taxes, fees for environmental damage, auctioning of EU ETS allowances etc.) to targeted environmental conservation programs. Practically GRFU financing represents the only national funds devoted to the environment during the last five years. GRFU’s objective is to stimulate sustainable development through environmental protection and conservation by providing administrative, economic, technical and financial support for programs, measures and interventions aiming at improving and restoring the environment and combating climate change. To this end, the GRFU finances programs set up by MEE to be implemented by other ministries and subordinated bodies, local authorities, legal entities and other stakeholders of the public sector. The annual budget of GRFU is more than 60 M€.

The responsibilities of GRFU include, among others:

The development of programs for financing measures and actions to protect, improve and restore the environment in the context of environmental and energy policy.
The evaluation, selection and monitoring of programs under funding.
Carrying out of the necessary procedures for the selection of individual implementation bodies of the above actions; agreeing with them on the terms and conditions for financing those activities by the Green Resource and monitoring these agreements.
The preparation of proposals and presentation to the Minister of MEEN and to the Strategic Committee of Environment Policy on the best achievement of the policy objectives in order to protect the environment and address climate change.

As one of the few state organizations with own funds devoted to the environment, GRFU plays an important role in the financial support of the Natura 2000 sites in Greece. At present, GRFU is participating in three LIFE projects, one as a coordinator and two as a project partner.
